The South Florida field guide

Build a Fort Lauderdale beach weekend that still has a night.

The trick is to make daylight the main event, then leave enough energy for dinner, drinks and Wilton Manors after the sun goes down.

Beach first, everything else second

Greater Fort Lauderdale’s LGBTQ+ travel guide highlights Sebastian Street Beach as a top gay beach destination. Use the beach as the emotional center of the day, not a gap you fill before nightlife.

A beach-first day that works

  • Morning: start slowly, bring water and sunscreen, and choose how much structure the beach actually needs.
  • Afternoon: stay with the water or move to a pool. A short reset before dinner is part of the itinerary, not wasted time.
  • Sunset: shower, change and choose dinner before the group gets hungry and indecisive.
  • Night: head toward Wilton Drive for one intentional evening, then leave before the weekend asks too much of you.

Make the reset visible: the strongest beach weekends protect the hour between sand and nightlife. Put it on the plan.

Add a slower detour

When you want a break from the beach, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens offers historic architecture and tropical gardens. Hugh Taylor Birch State Park adds coastal nature and green space inside the city. Check official hours, admission and conditions before you go.

Pack for the transition

Bring a second outfit, sun protection, comfortable walking shoes, a refillable water bottle and a charging cable. If the night matters, plan the ride before you are tired.
